Rory Thor Chuan Leong from Originalomin Snooker Training Center adds one more silverware to his mantelpiece as he wins Leg 5 of the National Ranking Snooker Championship 2010 at Club 2 Puchong. Rory, who currently holds the top seed in the Malaysia ranking list beats Sebastian H’ng who also hails from Penang, 4-2.
Both players have met previously in Leg 2’s final with Rory emerging as the eventual winner. This time around is no different as Rory yet again denies Sebastian from claiming his maiden victory, winning both Finals with identical scoreline.
In the earlier Semi Finals, Rory beats former National Snooker and Pool Champion Elvin Lean with a convincing scoreline of 4-0, including a high break of 81 points. In the other match, Sebastian had his revenge as he beats Mohd Reza 4-2 after losing to him at the same stage of Leg 4.

KUALA LUMPUR: A clueless president? That seems to be the image projected by Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF) president Prof Datuk Ar WY Chin as revealed in the minutes of the MSBF council meeting held on March 5.
The minutes showed that Chin “apologised for his long lapse in conducting MSBF meetings and business as he is equally overpreoccupied by his private employment”.
Chin serves as a dean in a local private university.
Having proudly mentioned that he has “served billiard sports and MSBF for over three decades”, Chin admitted he was “unaware MSBF have their own website”.
For the record, the official MSBF website — www.geocities.com/raylim9/ msbf.html — has been operating for years up until recently.
The other website catering for the local snooker scene is www.xzbilliards. com.
The meeting, held at Casa 2 in Bukit Jalil, was attended by all the members except executive secretary Patricia Kang.
Perhaps Chin is also “unaware” that three of his council members are from two “non-existent” State associations.
Mailsport learnt the Selangor and FT associations were not registered with the Sports Commissioner’s office as per the Sports Development Act 1997.
MSBF secretary Melvin Chia and coordinator SS Chua are said to be from Selangor while vice-president Wales Tan contested for the position under the FT ticket. Melvin declined comment.
Only four States — Johor, Terengganu, Kedah and Sabah — are affiliated to MSBF. The status of other States, including Sarawak and Kelantan, remains unclear.
The minutes also revealed Chin was not keen to send the national cue artists for overseas assignments.
Chin was said to have “lamented he was absolutely abhorred by the prevailing ingratitude attitude shown by the national players” and
“recommended MSBF to go back to the drawing board based fundamentally on past history when national players were selected solely by competitions in the market”.
Prior to this, the handful of players were based in Bukit Jalil and sparred with each other most of the time — without the guidance of a national coach or a proper programme.
The team was disbanded and the players are now left to fend themselves by playing in the handful of tournaments organised by local snooker operators.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sports Development Act 1997 has been around for more than a decade.
Yet, it is shocking to learn that some 600 sports associations — including State affiliates — have yet to register with the Sports Commissioner’s (SC) office!
Among those on the list are the Penang Chess Association, Penang Kayak Association, Penang Paintball Association and Penang Carom Association.
This came about after Mailsport was told the Selangor and Federal Territories Snooker and Billiards
Federation do not exist but yet have “officials” serving the Malaysian Snooker and Billiards Federation (MSBF).
A quick check with the SC’s office proved both the Selangor and FT snooker bodies were not registered — and, therefore, individuals from these “affiliates” in the national association’s committees are “illegitimate”.
Only Perlis, Johor, Penang, Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan and Perak affiliates are registered with the SC’s office.
“We were afraid to go public with as we might suffer the backlash. It’s been more than 10 years and still there are so many associations that have yet to register with us. We can only advise them to register,” said SC
Datuk Nik Mahmud Nik Yusof (pic). Section 16 of the Act reads that sports bodies registered under the Societies Act will need to register with the SC.
“So many associations have not renewed their constitutions and we have now set a dateline of July 15. If they do not register by then, they will no longer be considered a sports body.”
The sporting bodies will be informed this week. Nik Mahmud agreed these associations were deemed “illegal” but stressed he was “powerless” to act to the vaguely drafted Act.
“Our hands are tied.”
The SC’s office issued a letter on Nov 5, 2008 to all 66 national bodies, advising them to coax their affiliates to register.
The SC’s office later sent a reminder to 415 associations, including State associations, from August to September 2009. Yet, only 14.7 per cent registered by Nov 20, 2009.
As of April 2, 2010, 21 national sports associations out of 34 have not revised their constitutions.
They include the Malaysian Weightlifting Association, the Malaysian Basketball Association, the Malaysian Hockey Federation, the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia and the Equestrian Association of Malaysia.
When told that some associations could resort to taking legal action against the Sports Commissioner’s office, Nik Mahmud added:
“Honestly, I would like to see how it goes. Perhaps it’s good to allow the courts to decide so that there will be some clarity on both ends.”
The Act is being amended and is supposed to be tabled in Parliament this month. Due to unforeseen circumstances, it has been put on hold, causing more frustration to the SC and sports associations alike.
