*Trivia: Note the slot for extensions! Wonder if this cue can be converted to become a snooker cue in the future?

Fancy becoming a Steve Davis in a pool match? Well, fancy no more. JH Leong has recently came back from Bangkok with these two babies, the O’min Climax Pool Cue. After years of experimenting with different materials, Ah O (O’min’s founder and owner as he is fondly known as) and JH have invented a snooker-looking-pool-cue.

Currently, these cues, that are available exclusively in Arena Snooker, weigh 19oz, just like your average pool cue, and has a tip of 12mm (or 12.3mm to you detail-freaks out there!). They come standing-in in 58.5-59” once connected together (the cues are ¾ two-piece cue) and are either made of ash wood or maple cue. The construction of the cues with either one of the materials lends each cue its own distinctive characteristics.

(L-R) Ash wood & Maple Wood.

For some of you who has followed my previous article of picking the right cue, I’ve explained that ash wood cues tend to be harder and have less flex (or less whippier) compared to a maple cue. The same goes for the construction of pool cues and applies to the two Climax.

The Pool Ferrule. Don’t let it cheat ya! It’s the real 12mm thang!

Cue “Feel”

After playing with the two pool cues alternatively for 2 hours and a chat with Michael and JH, the ash wood Climax transfers power to the cue ball much easier compared to the maple cue. Break after break, the ash wood cue scatters the balls easier all over the table. However, I can’t seem to find a proper control for the cue ball compared to the maple cue.

I’ve only picked up 9-ball and 8-ball seriously recently for about 2 months and I don’t find much difference during play with either one cue but the because of the whippier end of the maple cue and the stroke of pool (feathering for snooker players), I find playing with the maple cue more “natural” and the control of the cue ball much better. Over-drawing (Over-tarik for some of you) and wrong placing (“salah-placing”) happens much easier with the trigger happy ash wood Climax. JH advises that the ash wood Climax to be the break cue and the maple cue to be the play cue.

Personally, I agree and will pick the maple too for play and keep the ash solely for breaking. I’ll rate an almost perfect 10 for the cues except I prefer the cues to look more imposing like the Predators. I believe if the Climax sells like hot cakes, which I’m sure they will for their price (hint, hint, its below 4 figures), definitely JH can look into more designs for these custom babies. I hope I can get my hands next on a Predator Pool cue soon to make a head-to-head comparison! So let me talk to JH and watch out for the next article on these babies!

Currently the cues are on sale. For more information, please call JH Leong at 012 320 7382

I started snooker in 1990. Played and Stopped every few years. I owned a few Omin’s cues (standard to premium). They are well made and with classic look. Recently I bought a powerglide 2-pc cue from my London trip (it costed me P.Stg.35) and used it to practice for a month (15-20 frames each week). Now I used to its weight and feel, and can do some 8-10 blacks easily. Agree to one post here that ‘the best cue is the one you are familiar with’. My powerglide can’t be beaten by Omin, while Omin cues are much more beautiful, visually. Any ‘good’ cue can give you better score, or skill, if you use it long enough to ‘get used to it’. Food for thought too on Chinese made 3/4 cues. My friend has played with it once (I think the brand is JX, if not forgotton) and never went back to Peradon, that he used for a year (and paid about 5 times higher than this JX). He bought his Peradon (UK made) from his trip overseas, while the JX he got from an ebay bid. The reason for change is that the Chinese cue fits him better and he spent lots of hours using it in practice, so he’s kind of ‘I get used to it’. The key word is “Getting used to your cue”. Cosmetics on the butt are personal preferences.
    2 cents thought.

I only can said a word “Awesome”! I been using it for some pool tourny and really great to play with it. It’s totally diff feeling if compare with Predator/Falcon or etc but i personally recommend Omin for players to play in pool….Thanks JH
