Total of 48 Players will compete in this SangSom 6 RED SNOOKER INTERNATIONAL (Pro-Am Invitational) TOURNAMENT 2008 . The winner will take away a prize money of THB 500,000 , As for the Runner up – THB 250,000 , Semi Finalist – THB125,000 , Quarter Finalist – THB75,000 .

The total prize money for the tournament is in the excess of THB 1.8 million (more than USD 55,000 ) with the winner receiving THB 500,000.

The BSAT President ( Mr. Sindhu Polsirivong ) has noted that 6-red snooker is a version being extremely popular in Southeast Asia, and it made a very successful debut at the 2007 Korat South East Asian (SEA) Games.

It may be recalled that at the first ACBS Board Meeting of year 2008 in Bangkok on February 2, the Members were highly enthusiastic about the future of 6-red snooker and were convinced that there exists a great possibility of staging three to four 6-red snooker international tournaments in as many countries in Asia next year.

The Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports (ACBS) is to introduce innovative competition of Six Red balls Snooker to rival the popular Nine Ball-Pool event.

From the view of the President (Mr Sindhu Polsorivong) , the sport of Snooker in Asia is going strong with many youngsters playing it now. “Next year (2009) Snooker will be in the South East Asian Games in Laos in December and also the Asia Indoor Games in Vietnam in October.”

Unlike Football/Soccer or other body contact sports, Mr. Sindhu Pulsirivong says Asian players have no DISADVANTAGE to other countries when it comes to snooker. “In the last IBSF World Snooker Championship in Korat ,Thailand, three medalists were Asians. And the runner-up in the IBSF World Under 21 Junior Snooker Championship in India last year was Chang Anda from China.”

The 26^th edition of the 2009 Asian championship will be in China.

The Snooker Association of Thailand’s officials led by Sindhu Poolsirivongse are joined by top players at the press conference at the Montien Riverside Hotel yesterday.

The leading professional stars were all oozing with confidence on the eve of the SangSom 6-red Snooker International, but when the action starts on Tuesday morning the lesser known players could well be the ones stealing the limelight at the Montien Riverside Hotel.

The field for the tournament, which gets underway at 10 am, is studded with big names like world No. 4 Mark Selby, former world professional champions Peter Ebdon and Ken Doherty, the people’s champion Jimmy White and Thailand’s own maestro Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm. ( JAMES WATTANA )

However, given the nature of the game, there are is an army of unranked contenders who are all capable of springing surprises during the course of the inaugural event, which offers more than 1.8 million baht in prize monies with 500,000 baht going to the winner.

Selby, winner of two world professional events last season, should enter the fray as the pre-tournament favourite, with Ebdon and Doherty being the other two outright title favourites.

There are players like Joe Swail, Stuart Bingham, Nigel Bond, Dave Harold, Michael Holt and Ricky Walden, though ranked a rung or two lower on the list, should be taken as title contenders.

Ratchapol, winner of three world professional ranking titles, plays two matches on the opening day, first facing Habib Subah of Bahrain at 12:30 pm and then taking on the fourth seed and world No. 20 Joe Swail at 8 pm.

The enticing battle between Ratchapol and Swail will be beamed live by TrueVisions on its TrueSport 3 channel.

As for the other Thai players, Thepchaiya Un-nooh is the player in form, winning the national 6-red snooker crown only a couple of weeks ago.

Also in the running are Supoj Saenla, a Main Tour professional, reigning Thailand No. 1 Issara Kachaiwong and Atthasit Mahitthi, winner of the 2007 IBSF World Championship.

A total of 40 matches will be played on the opening day with the first session starting at 10 am. Entrance is free.

All Set For Historic 6-red Snooker Event All preparations have been finalised to stage the SangSom 6-red Snooker International, a tournament that is bound to go down as a milestone in the cue sports history books and has all the ingredients to become the most exciting event of the year. Addressing a crowded press conference on Thursday, Sports Authority of Thailand Deputy Governor Chalermchai Bunyarak praised the efforts of the Billiard Sports Association of Thailand (BSAT) in making the event possible and adding a brand new dimension to the discipline of snooker. The tournament takes place at the five-star Montien Riverside Hotel in Bangkok on July 8-13. Sindhu Pulsirivong, president of BSAT, told the press conference that the announcement of the event had created great excitement at all levels of international snooker and two former world professional champions, Peter Ebdon and Ken Doherty, had already confirmed their participation. Current world No. 4 Mark Selby, winner of two Main Tour ranking events in the 2007-2008 season, will also be starring in the event, he added. A total of 18 Main Tour professionals are likely to take part in the tournament, beside players from other leading snooker-playing nations in Asia and Europe and the host country. The total prize money is in the excess of 1.8 million baht with the winner taking home 500,000 baht. Thailand have decided to award direct entries to its professional stars Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm(James Wattana) and Supoj Saenla, while the remaining six home players will be selected from the first Thailand 6-red Snooker National Championship on June 12-21 at the TBC Snooker Centre on Ramkhamhaeng Road. Sindhu also explained to the press conference that 6-red snooker is extremely popular in Southeast Asia and it had made a very successful debut at the 2007 Korat South East Asian (SEA) Games. “This version of snooker is faster and people really enjoy watching it. The beauty of it lies in the fact that the highest possible break in is only 75 points, so players capable of scoring breaks of 40-plus can easily upset those who regularly record centuries,” he said. The only difference between the traditional snooker and 6-red snooker is that in 6-red snooker, the number of red balls stacked in a triangle behind the pink is reduced to six balls. All the other IBSF-WPBSA rules apply in the 6-red snooker. The enthusiasm of international snooker community has not been limited to players alone. For the first time in history, top ranking officials of the World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association (WPBSA), International Billiards & Snooker Federation (IBSF) and European, African and Asian bodies will all be gathering on one platform in Bangkok to attend the tournament. The Asian officials have high hopes that 6-red snooker has the potential to grow and that there exists a great possibility of staging three to four 6-red snooker international tournaments in as many countries in Asia next year. Moreover, the interest on the part of media here has been tremendous. Thailand National cable TV network trueVisions has stepped in to televise live one key match daily from July 8 to 11, 2008, both semifinals on July 12 and the final on July 13, which will also be beamed live nationwide by the terrestrial NBT (Channel 11).
